This project will restore a ‘vintage’ electric vehicle to operable condition to be used as a commuter vehicle and a promoter of sustainability and alternative / renewable energy. On September, 2008 I was delivering plants to a roofing company in suburban Washington DC where I saw a derelict electric vehicle parked next to the customer’s building. Upon inquiry, the vehicle was donated to me immediately. The Vehicle The EV is a circa 1979 or 1980 Electravan, originally produced by Jet Industries of Austin TX. It is based on Subaru model 600 ‘microvan’ that was originally equipped with a 25 HP, two-cylinder, two-cycle engine. Jet installed a 20HP GE electric motor, controller, battery charger, and 96V bank of golf-cart batteries. The Original Specs are: • Battery Voltage: 96VDC with 12VDC auxiliary • Controller: GE EV-1 Controller • Motor: GE Model 20HP Series wound DC motor • Battery Charger: Lester • Range: About 40 miles • Recharge time: 5 to 10 hours • Top speed over 60 MPH
